A flow map has a direct purpose and that is to show the movement of objects from one location to another, for example, the amount of goods being traded in a particular operation. This map qualifies as a flow map because it show the annual freight tonnage by mode, the National Highway System, the U.S. Class I Railroad, or inland waterways. The lines also get thicker to represent a higher volume of tons traded on that particular path per year. Looking at the map you can see that inland waterways to transport good is very popular in the southeast. The National Highway also seems very popular because it is something that is used all over the nation, but more heavily on the eastern side. The railroad system seems to be the least popular but in one section over Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Iowa there is a heavy use of the railroad system.
