Proportional Circle Map

In proportional circle maps, the data is represented by the size of the circles. In this map you can also see the use of colors to represent data, this is because this map was used to show the results of the 2012 presidential election. The blue color is used to represent Democratic support and the Red is used to show Republican support, and the size of these circles vary with the number of people that represented their party in that area. As you can see with Florida being a swing state the results are very mixed but because of a large hispanic population in South Florida that wants leniency with immigration laws, there is more support for the democrats and therefor swaying Florida to the Democratic side which is represented by a larger blue circle.

Choropleth Map

The choropleth map is defined by areas of the map that already have determined units such as states or counties, and then a measurement is given to those areas based on data. For example, in the map above,  the data being depicted are males per 100 females in the 2000 census. The map then established colors to show which states have a higher proportion of males to females and which ones have a lower proportion. As you can see on the map, Alaska and Arizona are a bright red, this indicates that there are 104-107 males per 100 females which is the highest it gets among the fifty states. States like Georgia and Alabama are represented by a very pale yellow which indicates that they have only 89 to 94 males per 100 females.

Dot Distribution Map

In a dot distribution map, dots are the primary indicator of what is being measured. This map specifically is showing Farm Density Across the United States in 1997. Using the dot distribution map it becomes easy to read because you can easily distinguish areas with high farm density being a darker purple color because of a surplus of dots, and areas with low farm density being a  whiter color because of a lack of dots. Here you can see the areas in the Midwest, Northeast and Southeast show a higher farm density than the areas in between the Midwest and the more Western States like California, Washington, and Oregon.

Propaganda Map

The purpose of the propaganda is to give a representation of what is going on in that part of the world during that particular time, generally meant to be humorous. These maps are generally created during times of war in order for people to give a comical spin on how they feel things are going down. In this map you can see that Russia is depicted as an octopus stretching out its tentacles over some of the other countries. Germany is depicted as a stern military man grabbing the tentacle ready for a challenge as well as Turkey why is laying down with an arm wrapped around one tentacle and a foot rapped around another.

Hypsometric Map

The hypsometric map uses various shades of colors and isohypses in order to show indications on elevation. The first give away that this is a hypsometric map is the bar used to scale on the right side, a big indicator is labeling through different shades of color in order to show more intensity in elevation in this case or less intensity. You can see that on the southwest section of the map the area is represented by a red to brown color which suggests areas of very high elevation.

PLSS Map

The PLSS is a way of dividing and subdividing land in the United States. It is used to divide in rectangular divisions the public domain lands in order to benefit the citizens of the United States. The map above shows which maps are public domain states by the different coloring. There are 30 public domain states according to this map. You can see that the Eastern edge of the nation as well as Texas is the section of non public domain states.

Cadastral Map

The purpose of the cadastral map is to display detailed information about property in a specific area such as land ownership information. This map system uses parcels and boundaries in order to provide information regarding location, shape, and size of land parcels. In the map above you can observe spacial detail in order to get a better understanding of the real locations of things as well as properties that are owned or not.
