Thematic Map

The most important factor about a thematic map is that it has to have a theme. Generally thematic maps portray distribution of rainfall in an area or population density. The main purpose of this map is not to show cities, roads, or subdivisions but to display their theme. This particular map is considered a thematic map because it is showing the Native Hawaiian population by census of the Island of Hawaii. Just looking at the map you can clearly see the division of the populations and where they are located and in what areas that population is more dense.

Planimetric Map

A planimetric map is a map that represents only the horizontal positions of features excluding depth and elevations. This particular map is a map of Tallahassee showing roads and bodies of water. The map gives you a basic 2D layout of the city giving the viewer a knowledge of the surroundings. This map would not help if the viewer needed to see things like mountains or changes in elevation, but does show road information and how to get around. This map is similar to the topographic map but different because topographic maps show vertical positions showing elevation and sea levels unlike the planimetric map.

This map was created as part of a competition in which the creator of the map chose to show innovative ideas to create a better earth. This qualifies as a mental map because it shows his ideas on how to create a better earth and even goes into great detail. For instance, one branch is technology, under technology he came up with the options to abolish, approve, or develop technology. He then greater described those things breaking off into more branches, clearly demonstrating his thought process and his point of view.
